Next Training Night- October 4th

Hi 2688-ers!

A few reminders: This Sunday at the MARC Orienteering practice will be held for all interested cadets, Red Star and up only please. (Orienteering requires some basic map and compass skills, which you fine Green Stars will get this year, we promise. )

Also, (and pay close attention, this is VERY important) next Tuesday the 4th will be our first of three Fitness Testing Nights between now and Christmas. You should show up in comfortable exercise gear and bring a water bottle. Be prepared to do some working out!

Now, before you groan and decide to be sick that day, A few reminders from me, the Camp Lady, Lt. Williams. Success in Army Cadets most definitely hinges on being physically fit. You will never get to jump out of a plane (like CWO Allen) or hike the glaciers in Alaska (like RSM Williams) if you can't reach at least a silver fitness level by the time you're in your third year or so. Gold would be even better. (A Gold Fitness level, plus good attendance and performance at camp, almost guarantees you'll get to take part in some cool adventures through Cadets.)

If you're not there yet, now is the time to start working at it. Many of you have a year or two to work up to that.

ALSO, and more important for most of you, it may seem unbelievable but camp forms for next summer will be entered by January 1st. That is NOT that far away, and many courses require that you have a VERIFIED fitness level. It needs to be verified every training year, in fact. If you do not show up to PT nights and have your fitness level verified, we will not be able to enter your application for courses like Basic Sports and Fitness, Basic Expedition, overseas exchanges, etc. For you older cadets, you also won't be able to apply to things like Operation Subzero this coming February.

Sorry to be long-winded, but the importance of the Fitness Test on your ultimate success within the Army Cadets can't be overstated.

If you have any questions about the Army Cadet Fitness Test, please give our Training Officer, 2Lt Wharton, a call. She will be happy to address any concerns you might have.

Pictures from Last Tuesday

Hi there!  Just thought you might like a peek at a few of the pictures that were taken on the first night of cadets. Sorry about the picture quality, but my "better" camera was in Alaska at the time!

It was great to see such a big crowd back for another year (plus some new faces!)

Nice also to know that everyone had a great summer and are still as crazy as they ever were!

This is a shot I snapped from up in the gym during the briefing from Capt. Gaul.

Speaking of Capt. Gaul, she tried to keep me from taking her picture, but SOMEONE had to document the damage that can happen when one CO's face meets one softball!

Hooper says hi!

Happy Monday, 2688!

Hey everyone! So good to see you all last Tuesday. A few reminders for THIS week:

-Uniform will be boots, pants, and 2688 T-shirt if you happen to have one. If not, please wear your regular uniform.
-A certain MWO who shall remain nameless (*cough* Hirtle *cough*) made a bet with the CO saying that he doesn't think all of you will remember to  bring paper and a pencil. How about proving him wrong, eh?
It's important to be there this week as the Training Dept will be giving out permission slips and supply lists for the upcoming weekend at Falls Lake. The long range forecast is calling for sun so far, so that's a good sign!

In other news, RSM Williams has returned from a very sucessful international expedition in Alaska. When she gets a chance to go through her photos, I'll post some of the best ones for you to see.

In the meantime, here is a few other pics from camp that I particularly liked:
------------------------------------------

This is a pic of Brandon Page practicing the snare drum on the Basic Pipes and Drums course. he is on the far end. He now has his Level 1 Drum badge!

This is CWO Dylan Allen when he got off the bus at
Argo. I'm sure it doesn't surprise anybody that he brought along an entire BOX of donuts.

Here is Tristan Meisner, (who tends to keep a low profile at Argo!) having a slushie on a hot day.

And here is a pic of cadets Butt and Conrad shortly after arriving at Argo. I'll bet that was a looooong day, wasn't it guys?

See you all tomorrow!

Congrats to our Shadow Ranks!

In case there's someone out there who does not know, the way a cadet is honoured for achievement is by receiving a shadow parade position during their graduation parade. I just wanted to take a few moments to give a shout out to all of the 2688 cadets who were so honoured in the summer of 2011:

First of all, Tristan Butts was not awarded a rank, but he was honoured in a different way: He got to participate in the banner party for Final Parade (which is a big honour all by itself!) as well as appearing on the Alpha company drill team.

Christian Hirtle, after a very long summer in the field (along with a broken finger) got the biggest laughs during the parade as Company Sergeant Major for Bravo company. (You'll have to ask HIM what he did to make the entire audience snicker...)

Joel O"Neil completed the Air Rifle Instructor course and was rewarded by being made a shadow Sergeant of his platoon.

Rodney Scott, pictured here with fellow 2688er Kyle Corkum, also was made a shadow sergeant for his General Training course.

Brandon Roberts, pictured here during his time in the field during the Basic Leadership course, was actually made Second in Command of his entire grad parade as a shadow Major! Bravo Zulu Brandon!

Access to some of my pics from the summer is hindered at the moment, so I apologize and I assure you more photos will be coming soon. But the following cadets also received shadow ranks this summer:

Katie Brown- shadow Warrant Officer for General Training
Wesley Eichel-shadow Sergeant for Basic Leadership
Liam Jeffers- shadow Captain (and Charlie company 2IC!) for Basic Marksman.

Also, be sure to be extra-nice to Dakota Bush when you see him...he wins the award for Most Injured 2688 Cadet for the summer, beating out Hirtle's broken finger with a fractured shoulder after a tussle with a wet bathroom floor.

He was still smiling though!

Now, I know I must be forgetting somebody, so if I am please remind me and I'll rectify the error.

Keep checking in for lots more pics of the summer's events at Argonaut, as well as regular info on the every day goings-on of the best cadet corps in Canada, the 2688 !

Welcome Back!

Hey there to all you crazy 2688 cadets! We're back and ready to roll for what I'm sure will be the BEST year ever in the history of this cadet corps.

Congratulations to all the cadets who passed their courses at Argo this summer. You worked hard, and it shows! Plenty of our cadets received Shadow Ranks at their grad parades, including Brandon Roberts, who was the second in command for the Basic grad. (And in his first summer at camp, too!)

Did I mention that this year marks the 50th anniversary of our cadet corps? That's a pretty special achievement, and we will be celebrating it in a big way. More on that later.

Congrats also to our newest CIC officer- Officer Cadet Josh Hunter! OCdt Hunter's paperwork finally cleared this summer and he was sworn in while working at Argo.

This blog is also new. It will be updated on a regular basis to keep all of you in-the-know and up-to-date on all the news in the 2688. Add this page to your favourites and be sure to check in often. We will be updating you about schedules, cancellations, upcoming events and the acheivements of our cadets.

Hope to see you all soon!
